The Department for Education and Employment (DfEE) is the Government Department responsible for policy on education and training in England. It is managed by the Standards and Effectiveness Unit (SEU) of the DfEE.

The Office for Standards in Education (OFSTED) is responsible for school inspection in England and from 1998, the inspection of Local Education Authorities (LEAs). It is a non-ministerial government department, independent from the Department for Education & Employment. The Teacher Training Agency (TTA) promotes teaching as a profession. The programme recognises the importance of school leadership in raising standards. The University of Nottingham has been selected to host the Government's prestigious National College for School Leadership. The college will be co-located with the Jubilee Campus.

The British Educational Communications and Technology Agency (BECTa) is a Government-funded agency responsible for ensuring that ICT supports the Government's efforts to drive up standards in curriculum subjects, in the teaching of key skills, in institutional effectiveness, and in the development of lifelong learning. It work closely, where appropriate, with the Government, Local Education Authorities (LEAs) and the commercial sector. This includes specific work with the Education Departments for England, Wales, Northern Ireland and Scotland. BECTa also monitors international developments in ICT.
The National Grid for Learning (NGfL) represents a collection of resources brought together by the UK Government to help raise standards in education and to support lifelong learning. It focuses on: the training of teachers through National Lottery funds; the connection of schools, libraries and other institutions; and the development of high quality content and software.
