Marie Curie Training Site Award: Fellowships available to conduct research into 'The principles for the design and evaluation of learning environments.'

The Centre has recently been awarded Marie Curie Training Site status under the European Union's Improving Human Potential programme. Funding for research visits between 3 months to 1 year hosted in the Centre is now available for doctoral research students resident in the European Union or Associated States.

The fellowships available in CREDIT offer an exceptional opportunity for young researchers to benefit from senior research expertise to carry out multi-disciplinary work into the development of technologies to support the learning process. The Centre offers a combination of leading edge research (bridging psychology, education, cognitive science, and artificial intelligence) with exemplary post-graduate training.

Further information including how to apply for a Marie Curie Fellowship is available here.

Scenarios for 'Schools for Tomorrow'

Prof. David Wood, Director of CREDIT, is currently working with the European SchoolNet (EUN) in Brussels as it seeks to establish the new EU-funded Validation Network (ValNet). The core aim of ValNet is to set up an integrated infrastructure to build up knowledge about innovation involving the use of technology in the schools sector.

As a member of the consortium, Prof. Wood is preparing a 'THINK' study that will offer future scenarios about the role of Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) in education. Senior officials from the Ministries of Education across a number of EU states and relevant individuals drawn from other organisations and industry have been involved in a series of interviews to help construct and refine the scenarios. This study along with a related analysis of existing innovative practice will underpin the development of an evaluation methodology for the ValNet project.

Prof. Wood will outline the key messages arising from the scenarios during a keynote speech at the forthcoming EUN conference/workshop to be held in Portugal in December 2001.

More good news for the Mixed Reality Laboratory (MRL)

The Mixed Reality Laboratory is celebrating another success. Dr Claire O'Malley (Deputy Director of CREDIT) along with colleagues at the MRL, form one of the key research groups recently awarded the 'Equator' Interdisciplinary Research Challenge (IRC). The University of Nottingham heads up this partnership of eight institutions in research into new digital technologies for a range of user groups and application domains - one theme will address playing and learning. The six-year programme funded by the EPSRC brings together different approaches from cognitive and social sciences, and art and design, with advanced technologies such as virtual and augmented reality - which merge digital and physical worlds.
